The Asheville Central Branch held it's annual Day of Service at Oakley Elementary School in Asheville on Saturday, April 26th. Coordination between the school, Home Depot and our committee was disjointed, as both Home Depot and the church had scheduled events that closely resembled each other without each other's knowledge. Mitch Skroski discovered the overlap, and after several tries, was able to locate the personnel at Home Depot that were coordinating their efforts. A couple discussions were had, and what would have been wasted effort and resources, became synergy of team effort. The church cleanup efforts set the stage for Home Depot's team that rolled in on Monday. At least two dozen large leaf bags were filled and removed; bushes were trimmed, and a garden box was assembled and filled. Power washing took place, and the church team left the area completely prepared for Home Depot to concentrate on projects that were more suited to a higher skill level. The school leadership was present, and appreciated the efforts that were made to improve the appearance and functionality of the courtyard. At least two dozen members of the church were present for some of the 4 hours that were spent at Oakley. |
